Travelers visit Thailand for many different reasons. Some enjoy the vast ecotourism options while others love the luxury shopping scene for cheap. Those who prefer the island life know that each island is famous for something different. Koh Tao is an island off the coast of the bigger Koh Samui and is known for snorkeling and scuba diving. Expert divers all over the world come to Koh Tao for its beautiful diving spots and vast marine life. The cheap Thailand prices are also enticing. As a beginner, however, it can be difficult to decide which company to dive with. New Way Diving should definitely be your first choice.
When I visited Koh Tao this summer, I discovered that I was also curious about diving. I have seen so much of it on social media and have wondered if it was really worth it. After researching the possible marine life I could see as well as the low costs of diving in Thailand, I decided to give it a try. Upon Googling possible diving companies, there were so many options available. Here is why I chose New Way Diving – and why you should choose them, too!
No Pool Time
At most dive companies, you will have to spend your initial training time in a pool to learn the basics. This will usually take about 2 hours, depending on the amount of people in your group. Whether you’re an expert or a beginner, you won’t step foot in a pool with New Way Diving. Instead, the instructors at NWD take you to a popular snorkeling location – a shallow area with a few marine species. By allowing you to learn the basics in the ocean, it gives you a chance to learn in the real environment. Plus, it then leads deeper and straight into your first dive, which eliminates the extra travel time.
At New Way Diving, they believe in personal instruction. Because NWD is a smaller diving company, the diving groups are small. On the boat with me, there were three instructors with six of us beginners, and my group of three was the biggest. This gives each beginner more time to learn, while giving the instructor less people to focus on. Personally, I prefer this method. I really believe I learned more because I was in such a small group.
Not only are the dive instructors at New Way Diving so knowledgeable, but they are also very friendly. They truly care about you and want you to succeed. It may be their job to make sure you’re safe, but it doesn’t stop there. After we finished diving, they asked if I wanted to hang around for a bit. I didn’t have any plans, so I accepted. We had a couple beers and just talked for a couple hours. The dive instructors and the owner himself had lots of interesting stories, and they love to exchange them with travelers’ stories of their own. You’d be surprised what you learn.
Of course I had to talk about the area itself! Thailand is an unexpected beauty, and Koh Tao is no different. And scuba diving truly is the best way to see all that Koh Tao has to offer. Technically speaking, I guess you can see all the wonderful diving sites on Koh Tao with any diving company on the island. However, I believe that New Way Diving’s kindness and expertise helps you see it in a unique way. They help you see the beauties of the island with calm and ease.
The only thing I was lacking on my first scuba experience was more time. Because I only had a day, I could not get my Open Water certification (it requires at least two days, sometimes three). However, I could not be happier about my experience with New Way Diving. The dive instructors really showed their knowledge and kindness with each individual they meet. I would recommend them to anyone, and I will be back next to get my certification!
